⭐ Ramadan Care: Wisdom Tooth Pain, Dental Implants & Safe Dental Decisions During Fasting
By Dr. Suraj Pawar – Oral Surgeon & Implantologist, UAE

Ramadan is a blessed month of reflection, discipline, and spiritual focus. But for many people in Dubai and across the UAE, this is also the time when wisdom tooth pain, jaw discomfort, or dental infections suddenly become more noticeable—especially during fasting hours.

As an Oral Surgeon and Implantologist with 16 years of clinical experience, I see many patients who are unsure whether dental treatment is safe or advisable during Ramadan. This blog will help you understand what is safe, what can wait, and how to manage symptoms while fasting.

⭐ Why Wisdom Tooth Pain Feels Worse During Ramadan
During fasting hours, several changes happen in the body:
- Reduced saliva flow
- Mild dehydration
- Longer gaps between meals
- Increased acidity during suhoor and iftar

These factors can make impacted wisdom teeth, gum inflammation, or jaw joint issues feel more intense.

Common symptoms include:
- Pain radiating to the ear or throat
- Swelling around the gums
- Difficulty chewing
- Jaw stiffness
- Headache or pressure

If the pain is mild, it can often be managed until after Ramadan. But if the pain is severe or associated with infection, delaying treatment may worsen the condition.

⭐ Are Dental Implants Safe During Ramadan?
Yes — dental implants are generally safe during Ramadan, but timing matters.

✔ Implants can be done safely if:
- You are not in active pain
- There is no infection
- You can take medications during non‑fasting hours
- You can maintain proper oral hygiene after the procedure

✔ Why implants are usually fine during Ramadan
- Implant surgery is controlled and minimally invasive
- Bleeding is usually minimal
- Post‑operative care can be managed after iftar and before suhoor
- Pain medications and antibiotics can be scheduled outside fasting hours

✔ When to postpone implants
- If you have uncontrolled diabetes
- If you cannot take medications after iftar
- If you are extremely anxious or prefer full comfort

In most cases, implant placement is not an emergency, so it can be scheduled at a convenient time.

⭐ Is Tooth Extraction Recommended During Ramadan?
Tooth extraction is not routinely recommended during fasting hours unless absolutely necessary.

✔ Why?
After any extraction:
- You cannot rinse or spit for 24 hours
- You must allow the blood clot to form
- Excessive spitting breaks the clot and causes bleeding
- You may need painkillers or antibiotics

⭐ When extraction IS allowed during Ramadan
Extraction is justified only when:
- Pain is severe
- There is swelling or infection
- There is fever
- There is difficulty opening the mouth
- The infection risks spreading

In such cases, delaying treatment may worsen the condition.

⭐ When extraction can wait
- Mild discomfort
- Occasional gum irritation
- No swelling
- No fever
- No difficulty chewing

In these cases, antibiotics and pain management after iftar may be enough until Ramadan ends.

⭐ How to Manage Wisdom Tooth Pain During Fasting
Here are safe, simple, and effective steps:

✔ 1. Maintain hydration during non‑fasting hours
Drink plenty of water between iftar and suhoor to reduce inflammation.

✔ 2. Avoid very hard or spicy foods at iftar
These can irritate the wisdom tooth area.

✔ 3. Use warm saltwater rinses after iftar
Do NOT rinse during fasting hours.

✔ 4. Take prescribed medications only after iftar and before suhoor
Never break your fast for painkillers unless medically necessary.

✔ 5. Keep the area clean
Food trapping around wisdom teeth increases pain.

✔ 6. Avoid chewing on the painful side
This reduces pressure and irritation.

⭐ General Oral Care Tips During Ramadan
To keep your mouth healthy throughout the holy month:

- Brush after iftar and before suhoor
- Use a soft toothbrush to avoid gum irritation
- Floss gently to remove trapped food
- Avoid sugary drinks at iftar
- Limit caffeine (it increases dehydration)
- Use miswak during the day if preferred
- Stay hydrated between sunset and sunrise

⭐ When Should You See a Dentist During Ramadan?
Seek dental care if you experience:
- Persistent pain
- Swelling
- Fever
- Pus discharge
- Difficulty opening the mouth
- Pain radiating to the ear or throat

These signs indicate infection and should not be ignored.

Ramadan is a time of peace and spiritual focus. Dental issues can be managed safely with the right guidance. Whether it’s wisdom tooth pain, jaw joint discomfort, or questions about dental implants, my goal is to help you make informed decisions during this holy month.
